Statement on Murray Street Signs
Shepherds of Good Hope’s Statement Regarding Signs on Murray Street
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OTTAWA — September 19, 2018 – Recent disparaging signs on residences on Murray Street have saddened our staff, volunteers, community members and individuals who come to Shepherds of Good Hope for assistance during difficult times in their lives when they are struggling with poverty, challenges related to mental health, addictions, trauma and homelessness.
As unfortunate and disappointing as this has been, we are grateful for the incredible support that we have received from so many individuals, donors, organizations, businesses and the incredibly dedicated and compassionate team of employees, volunteers and partner agencies at SGH.
All who care deeply about offering hope to people when they are experiencing difficulties in their lives. We have strong relationships with our community. When concerns and needs that are important to our neighbours are brought to our attention, we strive to be good neighbours and endeavor to respond proactively to resolve them.
For more than 35 years, we have offered innovative programs and services to help those who need us most, without judgement. We are proud to live in Ottawa, a caring and compassionate city that has not forgotten about its vulnerable populations.
We will continue to offer critical services to homeless and vulnerable people in Ottawa. As a community, let’s offer hope, not shame.
Respectfully,
Deirdre Freiheit
